Why count grafts at all

Because the graft is the unit almost every US quote is built on, and the one that makes quotes comparable. A total on its own tells you little: one clinic's figure may cover a smaller session, another may leave out tests, medication and follow-ups. Once you know the graft count, the pricing model and what is included, two quotes for the same head can finally be set side by side.

Where our numbers come from

Surgeons' graft counts come from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery's 2025 Practice Census, which reports a mean first session of 2,347 grafts in 2024. Prices come from six published US cost guides, four of which print a price per graft; we list each with its date in our sources file and do not name them on the page, because we do not promote clinics. Insurance and tax rules come from an insurer's published policy and the IRS's own publications, and everything about borrowing comes from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Where no trustworthy figure exists, we say so and print nothing. There is no official US average price for a hair transplant, so you will not find one presented as fact here.

What we will not do

We will not rank clinics or surgeons, publish before-and-after photos, or tell you what treatment to take. Nobody on this site is a clinician, and nothing here has been checked by one. What we can do is help you arrive at a consultation knowing what the bill should contain, and leave with a written quote you can check. Start with what a hair transplant costs or the nine lines a quote should show.

Five questions before the first consultation

How much does a hair transplant cost in the US?
Nobody publishes an official figure, so we report the range the published guides print: FUE at $4 to $12 a graft and strip surgery at $2 to $10, in four US guides read on 22 September 2026. Applied to the 2,347-graft average first session in the surgeons' own 2025 census, the FUE end of that works out between $9,388 and $28,164. Your quote depends on your graft count, the technique and who performs each step.
Will health insurance pay for it?
Almost never for ordinary pattern baldness. Aetna's published policy, for one, calls a transplant for male pattern baldness or age-related thinning in women cosmetic, and treats it as medically necessary only when the loss is clearly caused by disease or injury. Ask your own plan for its written position before any surgery date is set.
Can I pay for a hair transplant from an HSA or FSA?
Usually not. IRS Publication 502 lists hair transplants among expenses you can't include as medical, and HSA and FSA spending follows the same definition of medical care. The exception is cosmetic surgery that improves a deformity from a congenital abnormality, an accident or a disfiguring disease, which your plan administrator would want documented.
Is a zero-interest payment plan really free?
Only if it is a true 0% APR loan, or you clear a deferred-interest plan in full before its promotional period ends. On a deferred-interest card, interest builds up in the background and, if any balance remains on the last day, all of it is charged. Read the words 'if paid in full' as a warning, not a promise.
Why do two clinics quote such different prices for my head?
Because they are often pricing different things. One may count grafts and charge for each, another sells a fixed band of grafts, a third quotes one fee for the day; some include medication, follow-ups and a touch-up, others bill them separately. Line the quotes up item by item before comparing totals.
